Aguilar Votes to Establish A Pathway to Citizenship for Dreamers and TPS Holders
Rep. Pete Aguilar voted to pass H.R. 6, the Dream and Promise Act, which was adopted in the House of Representatives with bipartisan support. The bill would establish a pathway to citizenship for immigrants living in the US under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) status. A recent study by the Center for American Progress estimates that the bill could provide protections for up to 2.5 million immigrants, including over 562,000 Dreamers in California.

El Congresista Pete Aguilar votó a favor de aprobar HR 6, la Ley de Sueños y Promesas, que fue adoptada en la Cámara de Representantes con apoyo bipartidista. La legislación establecería un camino hacia la ciudadanía para los inmigrantes que viven en los Estados Unidos con Acción Diferida para los Niños Llegados en la Infancia (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals o DACA), el Estatus de Protección Temporal (Temporary Protected Status o el TPS) y el estatus de la Salida Forzada Diferida (Deferred Enforced Departure o el DED). Aguilar DACA Amendment Included in 2020 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Bill
Rep. Pete Aguilar announced that his amendment to allow Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients to work in the federal government was included in the 2020 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations bill, which was reported out of the subcommittee on Monday, June 3, 2019. A longtime advocate for Dreamers, Rep. Aguilar fought to include the language in the text of this year’s bill after the same language was passed by a bipartisan vote in the Appropriations Committee in 2017, only to be stripped from the final bill text by Republican leadership. The same amendment was voted down by Republicans in 2018.

Aguilar Announces Winner of 2019 Congressional Art Competition
Rep. Pete Aguilar announced that Joel Martinez is the winner of this year’s Congressional Art Competition for California’s 31st Congressional District. A sophomore at Wilmer Amina Carter High School in Rialto, Joel’s painting, entitled 03, was chosen by Rep. Aguilar and a panel of judges as the winner out of more than 60 submissions from area high school students. In addition to having his work displayed in the US Capitol for the next year, Joel and his family will have the opportunity to travel to Washington, DC to meet with Rep. Aguilar and winners from other Congressional Districts courtesy of Southwest Airlines. The winner was announced at the 2019 Art Competition reception hosted by Rep. Aguilar at the San Bernardino County Museum.

Aguilar Takes Job for a Day Tour to One of San Bernardino’s Newest Small Businesses
Rep. Pete Aguilar made the second stop of 2019 on his Job for a Day tour of the Inland Empire, working as a barista at Viva la Boba in San Bernardino. The small business opened in March with the goals of creating a community-oriented space and helping to revitalize downtown San Bernardino.

Aguilar Introduces JOBS Act to Connect Inland Empire Job-Seekers with Employment Resources
Rep. Pete Aguilar re-introduced the Job Opportunity and Business Services (JOBS) Act, a bill he drafted with the input of local advocates to help Inland Empire job-seekers and businesses connect with employment resources. The legislation empowers local Workforce Development Boards (WDBs) to advertise their services, including on-the-job training, career counseling, and mentoring, to businesses and potential employees in the communities they serve

Aguilar Presides Over House Floor During Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization Debate
Rep. Pete Aguilar was designated by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to serve as Speaker Pro Tempore of the House of Representatives. As Speaker Pro Tempore, Rep. Aguilar presided over floor proceedings as the House debated H.R. 1585, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (VAWA) of 2019.

Aguilar Announces over $700,000 for Inland Empire Affordable Housing Programs
Rep. Pete Aguilar announced that Neighborhood Partnership Housing Services (NPHS) has been awarded $270,000 and Neighborhood Housing Services of the Inland Empire, Inc. (NHSIE) has been awarded $447,000 by NeighborWorks America, a Congressionally-chartered nonprofit that provides financial support to affordable housing programs throughout the country.

Aguilar Announces Over $4 Million in Inland Empire Head Start Funding
Rep Pete Aguilar (D-San Bernardino) announced that Easterseals Southern California has been awarded $4,469,703 from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Head Start Programs. The Head Start funding will be used to support Easterseals Early Head Start services, including full-day child care and both center-based and home-based early education programs for Inland Empire children living with or without disabilities. Founded in 1907, Easterseals provides resources to families with disabilities throughout the United States, serving over 1.4 million people each year.

Aguilar’s Bill to Connect Veterans with Civilian Jobs Takes Effect
The Active Duty Voluntary Acquisition of Necessary Credentials for Employment (ADVANCE) Act, a bill authored by Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-San Bernardino) and signed into law by the president in 2018, has taken effect. The implementation of the new policy means that states have the ability to waive certain requirements for qualifying veteran, active duty and reserve military service members who are seeking commercial driver’s licenses.
