Reps. Pete Aguilar and Norma Torres announced $1,590,996 in federal grant funding for the City of Rialto and $301,363.63 in federal funding for the Fontana Fire Protection District. The funding was awarded by the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) through the Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) and Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) programs. The SAFER grant, awarded to the City of Rialto, will fund the hires of up to seven new firefighters and enable the Rialto Fire Department to expand their ability to provide life-saving assistance throughout the city. The AFG award will allow the Fontana Fire Protection District to replace and upgrade outdated radio equipment with Bluetooth-enabled breathing apparatuses in order to improve firefighter communication and safety. Both Aguilar and Torres serve on the House Appropriations Committee, which determines funding levels for federal agencies and programs, and have successfully fought for funding increases to programs such as SAFER and AFG that provide resources to first responders.

Today, Representative Pete Aguilar announced that Citadel Community Development Corporation, a San Bernardino-based nonprofit, received a grant of $1,500,000 from the United States Department of Labor. The grant funding will allow Citadel to carry out its mission of helping formerly-incarcerated Inland Empire residents re-enter the workforce by funding on-the-job training and support for new hires.

Rep. Pete Aguilar announced that SAC Health Care System (SACHS) has received $2,142,792 through the Affordable Care Act Teaching Health Center (THC) grant program. In partnership with Loma Linda University Health (LLUH), this grant funding allows physicians to complete their residencies with SACHS and provide affordable medical services to families throughout the Inland Empire.

Aguilar spent the day packing and preparing Anita’s products for shipments, providing him an opportunity to learn more about the business and hear from Inland Empire residents who work there.

“Special Counsel Mueller’s report and testimony clearly outlined unacceptable, inappropriate and potentially criminal conduct by the president, including obstruction of justice. Despite attempts in Congress to investigate the president’s actions, the administration has chosen to hinder investigations, withhold documents, and ignore congressional subpoenas. No American is above the law. After careful consideration and conversations with members of my community, I believe it is time for the House to begin proceedings to determine whether the president’s conduct meets the standards of impeachment.”

Rep. Pete Aguilar announced that the Loma Linda University School of Nursing received a grant of $684,848 from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Advanced Education Nursing Grant Program. The funding will be used to increase the number of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) in medically-underserved communities throughout the Inland Empire by providing tuition assistance and enhancing training for School of Nursing students.

Pete Aguilar announced that the San Bernardino County Preschool Services Department will receive a grant of $51,157,373 from the US Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families. The funding will be used to continue providing early education and family support services to more than 6,000 children throughout San Bernardino County.

The House passed H.R. 2500, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2020. The bill, which authorizes military spending for the upcoming fiscal year, included seven amendments authored by Rep. Pete Aguilar. The bill also included a 3.1 percent pay raise for military personnel, the largest since 2010.

Rep. Pete Aguilar announced that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded a grant of $600,000 to the San Bernardino International Airport Authority (SBIAA). The funding comes from the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program, and will be used to rehabilitate and improve existing airport apron in order to maintain the integrity of the pavement. The improvements will increase public safety and longevity of the airport.

The House of Representatives passed legislation containing language offered by Rep. Pete Aguilar that would allow immigrants with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status to become eligible for federal employment. The provision was passed by the Appropriations Committee earlier this month along with language prohibiting the deportation of DACA and TPS recipients.

Rep. Pete Aguilar announced that the United States Army awarded an $82,490,177 contract to Gentex Corporation, with work to be performed at its Rancho Cucamonga facility. The contract is for the Joint Service Aircrew Mask for Joint Strike Fighter (JSAM-JSF), which provides respiratory protection to U.S. and allied pilots while flying JSF F-35 aircraft. Rep. Pete Aguilar hosted a panel at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s annual conference, entitled Homeland Security: Community Readiness Strategies for the Latino Community. The discussion, which coincided with National Preparedness Month and Hispanic Heritage Month, focused on strengthening communication between law enforcement, schools and hospitals in Latino communities so municipalities are prepared for extraordinary emergency situations, including natural disasters like earthquakes and wildfires, or man-made situations like the attack at the Inland Regional Center.
