Rep. Pete Aguilar hosted Inland Empire students who were accepted to US Military Service Academies to celebrate their achievements. After an intensive application process, the six students were accepted to their respective academies after being nominated by Aguilar. Ryan Metz of Alta Loma, Bradley Vargas of Alta Loma and James Luci of Rancho Cucamonga will attend the US Naval Academy. Jordan Masterson of Rancho Cucamonga and Jessica Morrall of Rancho Cucamonga will attend the US Military Academy and Jennifer Bahna of Upland will attend the US Air Force Academy.

The House of Representatives passed H.R. 2740, the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, Defense, State, Foreign Operations, and Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act, 2020. The bill includes Rep. Pete Aguilar’s provision to appropriate an additional $3 million in funding for the Department of Defense (DoD) Cyber Scholarship Program, bringing funding for the program for the upcoming fiscal year to $10 million. The increase in funding will allow more students to participate in the program, which granted 40 scholarships to students in 2018, including to two students at California State University, San Bernardino.

Rep. Pete Aguilar took his “Job for a Day” tour of the Inland Empire to Tacos Don Ramon in San Bernardino, where he worked for the day as both a cook and a cashier. Tacos Don Ramon is owned by Ramon and Maria Rodriguez, who opened the business with the goal of selling authentic Mexico City-style cuisine after immigrating to Southern California from Mexico. Aguilar chose the location to highlight the contributions of immigrants to the San Bernardino economy during Immigrant Heritage Month, which takes place each year in June.

The House Appropriations Committee passed two provisions authored by Rep. Pete Aguilar to protect DACA recipients and allow them to serve their communities. The first amends the Homeland Security Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2020 by adding a provision that prohibits the detention and deportation of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, so long as they still meet all eligibility requirements for DACA status. The second, which was included in the Financial Services and General Government appropriations bill, allows DACA recipients to become eligible for federal employment.

This week, the House Appropriations Committee passed the Fiscal Year 2020 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill. The bill, which provides funding for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, included language submitted by Rep. Pete Aguilar that pushes the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development to re-evaluate the process for determining Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loan limits. The report language encourages HUD to raise FHA loan limits in regions with housing markets that are still recovering from the recession, like San Bernardino. Relief will specifically apply to Metropolitan Statistical Areas of 1,300 square miles. This change would help more families access affordable loans that better reflect the median sales price in the region.

Rep. Pete Aguilar voted to pass H.R. 6, the Dream and Promise Act, which was adopted in the House of Representatives with bipartisan support. The bill would establish a pathway to citizenship for immigrants living in the US under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) status. A recent study by the Center for American Progress estimates that the bill could provide protections for up to 2.5 million immigrants, including over 562,000 Dreamers in California.

Rep. Pete Aguilar announced that his amendment to allow Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients to work in the federal government was included in the 2020 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations bill, which was reported out of the subcommittee on Monday, June 3, 2019. A longtime advocate for Dreamers, Rep. Aguilar fought to include the language in the text of this year’s bill after the same language was passed by a bipartisan vote in the Appropriations Committee in 2017, only to be stripped from the final bill text by Republican leadership. The same amendment was voted down by Republicans in 2018.

Rep. Pete Aguilar announced that Joel Martinez is the winner of this year’s Congressional Art Competition for California’s 31st Congressional District. A sophomore at Wilmer Amina Carter High School in Rialto, Joel’s painting, entitled 03, was chosen by Rep. Aguilar and a panel of judges as the winner out of more than 60 submissions from area high school students. In addition to having his work displayed in the US Capitol for the next year, Joel and his family will have the opportunity to travel to Washington, DC to meet with Rep. Aguilar and winners from other Congressional Districts courtesy of Southwest Airlines. The winner was announced at the 2019 Art Competition reception hosted by Rep. Aguilar at the San Bernardino County Museum.

Rep. Pete Aguilar made the second stop of 2019 on his Job for a Day tour of the Inland Empire, working as a barista at Viva la Boba in San Bernardino. The small business opened in March with the goals of creating a community-oriented space and helping to revitalize downtown San Bernardino.

Pete Aguilar announced that the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) awarded the San Bernardino Associated Governments (SANBAG) $8,678,312 in funding through a Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Grant to help construct the Redlands Passenger Rail Project (RPRP). Rep. Aguilar has continually supported construction of the RPRP, beginning with his time leading the countywide ballot measure (Measure 'I') as campaign manager, to his service as Councilmember and Mayor of Redlands serving on the SANBAG Board of Directors, and now in his role as the region’s congressman. Rep. Pete Aguilar announced that he will host an Inland Empire Jobs Fair on Friday, July 22nd from 9:00AM to 12:00PM at the Frank Gonzales Community Center in Colton. The jobs fair will connect job seekers with Inland Empire employers looking to hire. This is Rep. Aguilar’s second jobs fair. Rep. Pete Aguilar introduced his latest bill, H.R. 5622, the Grace Period Alleviation (GPA) Act. The bill would help ease the financial burden on students by extending their loan repayment grace period, eliminating interest payments during the grace period for students with subsidized loans, and allowing students to refinance their loans under certain circumstances.
