Aguilar Issues Statement on Passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act
Rep. Pete Aguilar issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the H.R. 7120, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, landmark legislation to reform policing practices throughout the country:
“Since the founding of our country, Black Americans have faced oppression and unequal treatment at the hands of our government and law enforcement agencies. The public outcry after the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rashard Brooks and so many others at the hands of law enforcement has made clear that this moment calls for long overdue action. There is still work to be done at every level of government to reform policing practices and end police brutality, but today’s vote signifies an important step toward justice and toward making our country safer for Black Americans. I look forward to working with my colleagues in Congress and with leaders in the Inland Empire community to continue our fight against systemic racism and our efforts to make our country and our community a better place for all residents to call home.”
On June 22, Rep. Aguilar held a virtual town hall to discuss racial justice and policing with Rep. Karen Bass, the author of H.R. 7120. The town hall can be viewed in full here. More information on the bill can be found here.
